SYBIL

Sybil is a studio dedicated to the research, development and distribution of weird gaming.

+

Through its residency and public program Sybil has incubated an emergent scene of media artists, game developers and gamers, storytellers, performers, protocol designers, world builders, and researchers.

+

All around us we see cultural infrastructures dying and new ones struggling to be born. In the gaming industry, AAA studios have shed tens of thousands of developers. Art institutions’ aura is fading, leaving artists and creatives in ever more precarious conditions.

+

Sybil ventures beyond the confines of legacy institutions, genres, and worlds, to discover new models for contemplative study and the production of deep, long-horizon works that challenge the accelerated artificial landscape of contemporary culture.

We use weird gaming as an open descriptor that merges the most globally popular cultural medium of the 21st century — gaming — with the critical aesthetics of the art world and the technical expertise of creative R&D.

+

Sybil’s mission is to position videogames as dark companions to art, society and technology, allowing us to experiment with social norms, speculative systems and autonomous protocols, ludic ecologies, fringe infrastructures, and things yet to be named.
